Qualitative and Probabilistic Models of Full Belief

چکیده
Let L be a language containing the modal operator B – for full belief. An information model is a set E of stable L-theories ([19], [21], [30], [27]). A sentence is valid if it is accepted in all theories of every model. We show that a formula A is valid if and only if it is a theorem of the modal system S5. The second part of the paper considers the possibility of providing probabilistic foundations for full belief. We study a proposal presented by Bas van Fraassen in [31]. Some of the results proved in [31] are generalized (especially theorem 5.2) and the dynamic aspects of the model are discussed. We show that a characterizations of probability kinematics compatible with van Fraassen’s proposal is cumulative inputs introduced at any stage in a series of changes are rigidly maintained through subsequent changes. Finally we consider the range of applicability of cumulative models of belief change.

Probabilistic Reasoning in Decision Support Systems: From Computation to Common Sense
Most areas of engineering, science, and management use important tools based on probabilistic methods. The common thread of the entire spectrum of these tools is aiding in decision making under uncertainty: the choice of an interpretation of reality or the choice of a course of action. Although the importance of dealing with uncertainty in decision making is widely acknowledged, dissemination o...
متن کاملPhD Dissertation: Propositional Reasoning that Tracks Probabilistic Reasoning
Bayesians model one’s doxastic state by subjective probabilities. But in traditional epistemology, in logic-based artificial intelligence, and in everyday life, one’s doxastic state is usually expressed in a qualitative, binary way: either one accepts (believes) a proposition or one does not. What is the relationship between qualitative and probabilistic belief? I show that, besides the familia...
متن کاملQualitative Verbal Explanations in Bayesian Belief Networks
Application of Bayesian belief networks in systems that interact directly with human users, such as decision support systems, requires eeective user interfaces. The principal task of such interfaces is bridging the gap between probabilistic models and human intuitive approaches to modeling uncertainty. We describe several methods for automatic generation of qualitative verbal explanations in sy...
متن کاملExploiting Non-monotonic Influences in Qualitative Belief Networks
In a qualitative belief network, dependences between variables are indicated by qualitative signs. These signs serve to model monotonic probabilistic relationships only: non-monotonic relationships between variables are modelled as lack of information. In this paper, we propose to include information about non-monotonic probabilistic influences between variables explicitly in a qualitative beli...

Abstract Introduction: The role of organizational values as a strategic element in evaluating the performance of successful organizations has long been considered by researchers. The aim of this study was to identify the components of organizational value management in the educational system using qualitative approaches. Methods: In the present study, organizational values were considered ...
